Membership

Welcome to the Arundel Vocal Arts Society Web Site. Hopefully, you’re here because you want to find out more about the chorus and are entertaining the possibility of joining our ranks. If you are a music lover and are interested in expanding your horizons or just adding a little pleasure to your life, AVAS offers a variety of musical challenges. Our first and foremost objective is to enjoy ourselves, while maintaining professional standards at all times.

Rehearsals for the 2009/2010 season begin September 9th, and new membership is open through the month of September. A brief audition is required of potential members. Each singer purchases his/her own music. AVAS rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. in the Woods Community Center in Severna Park. EACH VOICE counts in AVAS. We number between 35 and 50 members, and every individual makes an important contribution to the total sound and atmosphere of the group. Our repertoire is diverse, including everything from Bach to Broadway. Each season presents new and challenging musical opportunities as we continue to improve our precision and vocal techniques.

Our fall concert this year is titled “A Spiritual Christmas” featuring Conrad Susa’s CAROLS AND LULLABIES, an extended work focusing on songs from the Southwest, and sung in Spanish. The second half of the program will features spirituals, and we are pleased to be joined by bass/baritone Robert Cantrell. Mr. Cantrell has sung with The Metropolitan Opera and The Washington National Opera. He will regale us with some solo works and join the ensemble in some choral numbers.

Looking forward to 2010, the spring program, “We’ve Got Rhythm,” presents works with the word “rhythm” in the title/piece or offers great rhythmic intensity. There’s an added surprise to this concert, but you’ll have to attend to satisfy you’re curiosity.

Join us, won’t you, either adding your voice to our numbers or supporting this enthusiastic group of vocalists as an audience member. Hope to see you soon!
